The terms ‘poem’ and ‘prayer’ are almost synonymous for me, because they represent a person’s brave attempt to communicate part of what they feel at their deepest, most vulnerable and wordless level using the limited medium of words. These are some of the ones that succeeded beautifully in touching that similar silent and sacred place within me.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons…
You are found in the space in between.
I am found in the space in between.
The space in between thoughts, acts, plans, goals and desires.
The space where we can breathe…
I built my house by the sea.
Not on the sands, mind you;
not on the shifting sand.
And I built it of rock.
A strong house
by a strong sea…
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean –
the one who has flung herself out of the grass…
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery…
Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,
May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.
As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity by lightened by grace…
Hokusai says look carefully.
He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing…
